I'm pleased to finally be able to share our video interview with Gavin DeGraw drummer Ian O'Neill.
After a lengthy 'email courtship', I finally had the pleasure of meeting Ian at the 2012 Pearl Christmas Party. We had known each other for a while through his work with Avril Lavigne and fellow Pearl Artist Rodney Howard.
Ian stopped by Pearl to pick up some gear and mentioned that he would be in rehearsals throughout the week in Nashville. A few days later, Pearl videographer Garrett DeLozier and myself head down to Soundcheck with cameras in tow to capture the magic. A few questions here and there... a few beats get thrown down... a little gear talk and done!
For being one of his first video interviews, Ian completely nailed it and this was one of the quickest onsite shoots to date. He is very knowledgeable about his gear and is very aware of what sounds work best for Gavin's vast catalog. The light was a little low in the room so we borrowed some nearby lamps to give that extra shine and a more intimate vibe. Between his Reference Series Brass snare, 24" bass drum, and 24" ride cymbal... that small kit packs a serious punch! Gavin's manager made an appearance and jokingly said, "So Ian, what did you do with your Rogers drums?" Very funny. :)
Thanks to Ian for kicking off the Pearl On Location series and for being so open... don't miss him on tour with Gavin DeGraw this Summer.
