Budgie

​One drummer who definitely deserves more recognition is Budgie from the ever evolving Siouxsie and the Banshees. His drumming was always a bit left of center by staying away from by-the-numbers rock beats and creating actual parts for songs. He wasn't incredibly technical but he played drums like a producer... never worrying about licks and tricks... just enhancing the melodies and creating a bed for it all to lay in. 

Budgie integrated concert and latin percussion within his kit and toured with akai samplers, sequencers, DAT machines, and Roland OctaPad II... he another in a growing list of hybrid drummers I kept a pre-internet eye on... tv, magazines, and music.
The band had released their first album in 1978 but I didn't discover them until their 1988 hit, "Peek-a-Boo" (the weirdest earworm you'll ever have), and had to work backwards. They were punk yet new wave but also rock and electronica while dipping into other genres here and there. Siouxsie and Budgie began a new group, The Creatures, the following year and his playing is really strong on their CD, "Boomerang".  
Instead of going down the rabbit hole of track-by-track, I'll just say hats off to Budgie for the early inspiration.
