Paulie Carrizzo was one of the absolute best in the industry and I mean as a person and drum tech for Todd Sucherman (and many others) throughout his long career.
I was shocked to hear about his passing today and immediately thought about the absolute immense loss that his friends, family, and the Styx camp must be feeling... Paulie had a larger than life presence.
I remember when he joined the Styx family in 2002 as I was still in another department at Pearl and I had many, many opportunities to work with him arranging parts, pieces, and kits for our 'relatively new kid-on-the-block', Todd Sucherman... I wonder what ever happened to that guy😉😁
Even if you didn't know him personally, you can see how regarded he was as a tech and as 'the nicest backstage tour guides EVER' from reading the messages pour from in-and-out of the industry. My own experiences with him was much like theirs... he (and all of the Styx crew) were top notch and it was great to see him work in his element. He shared a lot of great stories with me too... especially the one about 'that one drummer who did that one thing that was really funny'... censored for my and your protection.
Also, he graciously shared his formulas for keeping Todd's hardware and shells so pristine and swore me to secrecy... which I took seriously. About a month or so later, I read an interview with him where he spelled out the exact details he told me... hilarious! I soon learned that although his formulas worked, my kit didn't have the 'special care sheen' that he gave to Todd's... it was all in his hands and the attention to detail he gave to it.
Todd and the guys are performing at The Beacon in NYC tonight and my thoughts go out to them, the whole Styx organization, and Paulie's family.
Rest in Peace, Paulie.
