I’ve been reading Modern Drummer Magazine since I picked up the December 1984 issue with Terry Bozzio (of Missing Persons) at a drum event in Louisiana. As a young drummer, I would read about these amazing personalities that played a variety of drum kits all over the world. I completely soaked up every single article and hung on to every word. I actually still use my vast MD collection as a reference source when needing information for my job or my playing.
I grew up in a small town and there were no venues that would host any of the drummers I read about. My Uncle Frank’s drumming was a huge influence on me but he was wired as a performer and not an educator. Junior High Band was teaching me to read music but there was no one to guide me on how to properly use a drum set. Between the invaluable content inside each issue of Modern Drummer and listening to a ton of music, I eventually taught myself to play... (which also explains my left-handed/right-footed style).
Although I have written online articles for Pearl, Tom Tom Magazine, and even Modern Drummer.com, it’s a huge honor to have something published in a trade that has been a constant in my drumming life.
Big time thanks to Billy Amandola at MD for making it a reality.
