Can't believe I'm writing about passing of another musician friend. Marvin was one of the most underrated drummers on the scene. Those in the gospel world had known about him for years but his influence spread way beyond that.
When I first got into the A&R Department at Pearl, Marvin was one of the first artists I got to hand out with at a show. He was so gracious and welcoming to a young knucklehead that had a million questions about his methods. His drumming with Fred Hammond & RFC was my introduction to that style of drumming and who better to hear it from then Marvin... deep deep grooves and endless (but musical) chops!
Many years later, he switched drum companies but we still kept in touch with the occasional email or call. Thankfully, I got to spend time with him in '09 when he came through Nashville on a gig. I met him at the hotel after his performance and we just talked for an hour or so... catching up on drums, music, and family... just a nice talk.
Marvin definitely had his share of struggles from his humble beginnings to his health issues but his faith and family kept him strong. I'm so glad I got to witness his particular style of magic in person.
